This study is a clinical analysis of 62 patients with liver abscess admitted to the Department of Surgery. Pusan National University Hospital during the period of 5 years from January 1987 to December 1991 with a review of the literature.
@ES The results obtained were summerized as follows:
@EN 1) The peak age incidence was the 5th decade and the male to female ratio was 1.8 : 1.
2) Of 62 case of liver abscess, 48 cases(77.4%) were pyogenic, 11 cases(17.8%) were amebic, 3 cases(4.8%) were mixed.
3) The liver abscess was more often involved in the right love(53.2%) than in the left(33.9%), and single abscess was encountered more than multiple abscess in 2.1 : 1 ratio.
4) The most common symptoms and signs were abdominal pain(82.3%), fever & chillness(79.0%) and abdominal tenderness(75.8%).
5) Leukocytosis was presented in 46 cases(74.2%) and serum alkaline phosphatase was increased in 30 cases(48.4%).
6) Operative drainge was done in 38 cases of all treated patient and percutaneous aspiration with or without drainage in 24 cases. Among the latter, reoperation was needed in 4 cases. In the result of treatment, defervescence period was
4.38¡¾3.84
and
6.12¡¾4.17 days in aspiration, operation cases respectively and leukocytosis was normalized on 6.05¡¾3.20, 5.61¡¾3.27 dyas respectively.
7) Complications occurred in 13 cases with operation & 3 cases with aspiration and death occurred in 4 cases with operation & 1 case with aspiration and operation.
